Importing or exporting assessments

Note: To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. To determine your role, follow the directions in Participant roles. For a basic understanding of roles and permissions, see Permissions and roles: Overview.

You can import an assessment you previously created, or export one for use in another IMS QTI-compatible application. To import an assessment, the source file must be an IMS QTI-compatible XML file. For more on the IMS QTI specification, see the IMS Global Learning Consortium.

Note: Because some systems differ in their interpretations of IMS QTI standards, importing IMS QTI-compatible files from other systems may not work reliably.

Importing an assessment

To import an assessment:

  1. In the menubar of the relevant site, click Tests & Quizzes.

  2. On the Assessments page, under "New Assessments" and next to "Import Assessment", click Import.

  3. In the "Choose a File" field, enter or browse to the file you wish to import.

  4. Select whether your file was originally exported from a Sakai system or from Respondus.

  5. Click Import.

Exporting an assessment

To export an assessment from Tests & Quizzes:

  1. In the menubar of the relevant site, click Tests & Quizzes.

  2. On the Assessments page, under "Pending Assessments", next to the title of the assessment you want to export, click --Select Action, and then click Export.

  3. Next to "Choose export type:", select either QTI v 1.2 or Content Packaging, and click Export.

    If you choose Content Packaging, you will be prompted to open or save the export file.

    Choosing QT v 1.2 will generate an XML file that will display in your browser. When you see the generated file, use your browser's save command to save it (i.e., export it) to your hard drive or some other storage device. For example, in most browsers you would click File and select Save Page As, and then select a location to save the exported assessment. By default, the name will be exportAssessment.xml. If you wish, you can rename this so you can easily find the assessment later.

    Note: In Internet Explorer 9, ignore the message that says "Only secure content is displayed". Click File and then Save As... to save the file. If a Save Webpage window pops up, click Yes, i.e., to save the web page anyway.
